Divine Civilization’s New Twelve Commandments

The New Jerusalem gemstones shine old and new religious teachings. In AD 95 they shone old Jewish and new Christian teachings. The gate-gemstones signed by the tribal leaders of Moses refined (“pearled”) the old time-tested teachings of Judaism. The foundation-gemstones signed by the apostles of Jesus flashed the new brilliant teachings of Christianity.

Today, the New Jerusalem gemstones shine out old and new global teachings. The gate-gemstones signed by tribal leaders have refined the old time-tested teachings of the seven Faiths of the Cycle of Prophecy. The foundation-gemstones signed by apostlesflash the new brilliant teachings of the Baha’i Faith opening the Cycle of Fulfillment. Its bedrock strata are 12 old virtues (of praise, vision, luck, happiness, struggle, forgiveness, understanding, unity, reward, exaltation, productivity, and power).1] Its columns are 12 new spiritual strengths.
Between 1911 and 1913 in Europe and America2] ‘Abdu’l-Baha often lectured about the universal principles taught by Baha’u’llah. For his different audiences he elaborated, subdivided, combined, and overlapped these teachings into lists of various lengths.3] Together, these teachings distil down to 12 basic teachings, per two secondary Baha’i sources4] that Shoghi Effendi backed, declaring how delighted he was with them and stating that they would prove of immense interest and benefit. The 12 gemstones of New Jerusalem shine these 12 gemstone teachings as:[5]
The gift of God to this enlightened age is the knowledge of the oneness of mankind, which all the divine Manifestations have proclaimed.…‌People of the world, ye are the fruit of one tree and the leaves of one branch.…Humanity is like unto a rose garden and the various races, tongues and people are like unto contrasting flowers. The diversity of colors in a rose-garden adds to the charm and beauty of the scene as variety enhances unity[6].…Light is now dawning upon the world’s darkened horizon. The first candle is unity in the political realm.…The second candle is unity of thought in world undertakings.…The third candle is unity in freedom.…The fourth candle is unity in religion.…The fifth candle is the unity of nations.…The sixth candle is unity of races.…The seventh candle is unity of language.[7]
By religion is meant that which is ascertained by investigation and not that which is based on mere imitation.…Humanity must be saved from the darkness of imitation and attain to the truth.…Tear off and cast away this ragged and outgrown garment of 1,000 years ago and.…Put on the robe woven in the utmost purity and holiness in the loom of reality.…Each person must be...fascinated and enraptured, and attracted to the divine bounty…like the butterfly who is the lover of the light from whatever lamp it may shine…like the nightingale who is the lover of the rose in whatever garden it may grow.…Reality is one and not multiple…is not divisible…does not admit multiplicity.…Science, education and civilization are most important necessities for the full religious life.…If any religion rejected science and knowledge, that religion was false.[8]
God has created for us both material blessings and spiritual bestowals.…Immortality of the spirit is…the fundamental basis of the divine religions.…The spiritual world is an eternal reality, an indestructible reality, a reality belonging to the divine, supernatural kingdom; a reality whereby the world is illumined, a reality which grants unto man eternal life....Its power causes man to escape from nature’s world. Escaping, he will find an illuminating reality, transcending the limited reality of man and causing him to attain to the infinitude of God.…where there is neither separation nor disintegration.¼Spiritual existence is absolute immortality, completeness and unchangeable being.…unlimited by the narrow restrictions of the mere human world of existence.…Spiritual perfections...are man’s birthright and belong to him alone of all creation. Man is, in reality, a spiritual being, and only when he lives in the spirit is he truly happy.…Spiritual longing and perception belongs to all men alike.[9]
The continuity of Divine Revelation widens the basis of all revealed religions, unravels the mysteries of their scriptures with unqualified recognition of the unity of their purpose, and pares away their priest-prompted superstitions....The great religions…are divine...their basic principles in complete harmony...their teachings...facets of one truth...their functions...complementary....Light is good in whatsoever lamp it is burning!...A star has the same radiance if it shines from east or west....A rose is beautiful in whatsoever garden it may bloom....In the East or the West, it is none the less a rose. For what mattereth...is not the outward shape and form of the rose, but rather the smell and fragrance which it doeth impart....The sun of reality is one sun, but has different dawning places....Love the Sun of Truth from whatsoever point in the horizon it may arise!...If the Divine light of truth shone in Jesus Christ it also shone in Moses and in Buddha...and it has now shone forth with the utmost brilliancy from the eastern horizon....If the nations of the world forsake imitations and investigate the reality underlying the revealed Word of God they will agree and become reconciled.[10]
The harmony of religious belief with reason is a new vista which Baha’u’llah has opened for the soul of man, for religion must be in harmony with science and reason. If it does not conform to science and reconcile with reason, it is superstition. Down to the present day it has been customary for man to accept a religious teaching, even though it was not in accord with human reason and judgment.…Every religion which does not concern itself with Science is mere tradition.…These two most potent forces in human life, will be reconciled, will co-operate, and will harmoniously develop.…Science and Religion should go forward together…as the two wings with which humanity must fly. One wing is not enough.…Should a man try to fly with the wing of religion alone he would quickly fall into the quagmire of superstition, whilst on the other hand, with the wing of science alone he would also make no progress, but fall into the despairing slough of materialism.…Sciences uplift the world of being, and are conducive to its exaltation.…The knowledge of such sciences, however, should be acquired as can profit the peoples of the earth, and not those which begin with words and end with words.…The best fruit of the tree of science and knowledge is that which benefits mankind and improves his condition.…Science is the discoverer of the past and conclusions as to the future.…Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind.…A legitimate conflict between science and religion cannot exist.[11]
Of all the Faiths, the Baha’i Faith is the only one to teach the fundamental…principle of the equality of the sexes.…Man and woman are equally the recipients of powers and endowments from God.…So why should we ever raise the question of superiority and inferiority.…Woman must be given the same opportunities as man.…Both man and woman are servants of God before Whom there is no distinction.…The sex distinction…is due to the lack of education for woman, who has been denied equal opportunity for development and advancement. Equality of the sexes will be established in proportion to the increased opportunities afforded woman in this age.…The male and female…are equal before God, for so he created them. Why should woman be deprived of exercising the fullest opportunities offered by life? Whosoever serves humanity most is nearest God—for God is no respecter of gender. The male and female are like the two wings of a bird and when both wings are reinforced with the same impulse the bird of humanity will be enabled to soar heaven-ward to the summit of progress.…Not until both wings are equally developed can the bird fly. Should one wing remain weak, flight is impossible. Not until the world of women becomes equal to the world of men in the acquisition of virtues and perfections, can success and prosperity be attained as they ought to be.[12]
Be free from prejudice…and adorned with equity and justice….Religious, racial, political and patriotic prejudice are the destroyers of human society. As long as these prejudices last the world of humanity will not attain to poise and perfection. As long as these threatening clouds are in the sky of humanity, the sun of reality cannot dawn.…Until they are dispelled the advancement of the world of humanity is not possible, yet racial, religious and national bias are observed everywhere. For thousands of years the world of humanity has been agitated and disturbed by prejudices. As long as it prevails, warfare, animosity and hatred will continue.…Racial prejudice…has bitten into the fiber, and attacked the whole social structure of American society and is the most vital and challenging issue confronting the Baha’i community at the present stage of its evolution.[13]
All the divine Manifestations...taught that men should love and mutually help each other....The fundamental truth of the Manifestations is peace...The divine purpose is that men should live in unity, concord and agreement....All created things are expressions of the affinity and cohesion of elementary substances....But when these elements become discordant, repelling each other, decomposition and non-existence result. Everything partakes of this nature and is subject to this principle as an expression or outcome of love....War has been a factor of derangement and discomfort whereas peace and brotherhood have brought security and consideration of human interests....For thousands of years we have had bloodshed and strife. It is...sufficient. Now is the time to associate together in love and harmony....Let mankind for a time at least live in peace, free from savagery...religious warfare, political warfare or some other clash of human interests....Why should we kill our fellow-creatures? Warfare...violates the spirit and basis of all religion. Universal peace must be instilled into the minds of all…in order that they may become the armies of peace....Wars and disputes shall cease and over the world will spread the Most Great Peace...which is now at long last within the reach of the nations. For the first time in history it is possible for everyone to view the entire planet…in one perspective. World peace is…inevitable....Soon enough, the most Great Peace will hoist the Standard of God among all nations¼in one common fatherland¼the planet itself. Universal peace and concord will be realized between all the nations.[14]
Knowledge is as wings to man’s life, and a ladder for his ascent.…The primary, the most urgent requirement is the promotion of education. It is inconceivable that any nation should achieve prosperity and success unless this paramount, this fundamental concern is carried forward. The principal reason for the decline and fall of peoples is ignorance.…It is therefore urgent that beneficial articles and books be written, clearly and definitely establishing what the present-day requirements of the people are, and what will conduce to the happiness and advancement of society…published and spread throughout the nation.…The publication of high thoughts is the dynamic power in the arteries of life; it is the very soul of the world. Thoughts are a boundless sea, and the effects and varying conditions of existence are as the separate forms and individual limits of the waves; not until the sea boils up will the waves rise and scatter their pearls of knowledge on the shore of life.…Children must be educated…taught a profession or trade, so that every member of the community will be enabled to earn his own living and…serve the community.…All cannot be scientists and philosophers, but each should be educated according to his needs and deserts.…All must receive training and instruction.…Lack of mutual understanding will be remedied and the unity of mankind furthered and advanced…every father to teach and instruct his children according to his possibilities.
First: whole-hearted service to the cause of education, the unfolding of the mysteries of nature, the extension of the boundaries of pure science, the elimination of the causes of ignorance and social evils, a standard universal system of instruction, and the diffusion of the lights of knowledge and reality.
Second: Service to the cause of morality, raising the moral tone of the students, inspiring them with the sublimest ideals of ethical refinement, teaching them altruism, inculcating in their lives the beauty of holiness and the excellency of virtue and animating them with the excellences and perfections of the religion of God.
Third: Service to the oneness of the world of humanity; so that each student may consciously realize that he is a brother to all mankind, irrespective of religion or race.…The mothers in their homes, the teachers in the schools, the professors in the college, the presidents in the universities, must teach these ideals to the young from the cradle up to the age of manhood.[15]
Baha’u’llah has set forth the solution and provided the remedy for the economic question. No religious Books of the past Prophets speak of this important human problem.[16] The economic problem is inextricably intertwined with the systems of Malignant Materialism. Therefore discussion about the multiple solutions to the economic problem comes later in the Section on Spiritual Economics.
Leaders should choose one of the divers languages, and likewise one of the existing scripts, or…create a new language and a new script to be taught children in schools throughout the world. They would…be acquiring only two languages, one their own native tongue, the other the language in which all the peoples of the world would converse…relieved and freed from the necessity of acquiring and teaching different languages. This will be conducive to the concord and the unity of the peoples of the world…and a great means of dispelling the differences between nations.…Then, to whatsoever city a man may journey, it shall be as if he were entering his own home.[17] Baha’i Writings have promoted no specific language and script. But meanwhile, de facto, English has come to fill the role of a universal auxiliary language.
True civilization will raise its banner when some noble kings…step forth with firm resolution and keen mind.…Keeping fast hold of the means of enforcing their views they will establish a union of the states of the world, and conclude a definite treaty and strict alliance between them upon conditions not to be evaded. When the whole human race has been consulted through their representatives and invited to corroborate this treaty which verily will be accounted sacred by all the peoples of the earth.…It will be the duty of the united powers of the world to see that this great treaty shall endure.…Then, should any king take up arms against another, all should unitedly arise and prevent him. If this be done, the nations of the world will no longer require any armaments, except for the purpose of preserving the security of their realms and of maintaining internal order within their territories. This will ensure the peace and composure of every people, government and nation though such a global supreme tribunal…permanently established in order to arbitrate international questions. The members of this arbitral court of justice will be representatives of all the nations.…In it all international difficulties will be settled.[18]

[5] The 13 teachings of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá in PUP440 become 12 by combining protection and guidance of the Holy Spirit and Religion must be the cause of unity together as the unity of spiritual reality. No ‘Abdu’l-Baha source endorsing exactly 12 teachings–as cited by Moffett in New Keys to the Book of Revelation p. 145—can be found by Riggs (Apocalypse Unsealed 305), Lovejoy (personal communication, 2005, San Diego), Terry (personal communication, 2005, Boston), or the Universal House of Justice (Letter to author, Nov 15 1999).
[6] The concept of human unity must not be tarred with the brush of uniformity. Unity and uniformity are poles apart Unity is varied while uniformity is dull. Unity spins the earth, moon, and sun in perfectly smooth harmonious orbits—no matter how disparate the 24-hour spin of the earth, the 28.5–day circuit of the moon, and the earth’s 365.25–day cycle round the sun (richly testified to by calendars, tidal charts, and ephemerides!). In contrast, uniformity turns the second, minute, and hour hands of clocks in exact rigid 60–second, 60–minute, and 12–hour cycles.
